                                                    When: September 9, 2011, 5:30-7:30pm
Where: Outsider Folk Art Gallery, 5th Floor,
Goggleworks Center for the Arts, Reading, PA

(from top left moving clockwise: Ted Gordon, Jim Bloom, Purvis Young, Anderson Johnson)

Interface: Expressions from the Collection will feature many important works from the George & Sue Viener Collection. The exhibit, which includes paintings, drawings, ceramic works, sculpture & mixed media works on wood, paper and other materials is curated by Emily Branch, Gallery Director, who joined the Outsider Folk Art Gallery this June.

The exhibit will run through December 9, 2011.

Not merely a selection of portraits, Interface: Expressions from the Collection, dives into various methods and reason for expression spanning Folk Art, Self-Taught and Visionary Art. Comparing and contrasting methodology revolving around historical and personal accounts, this exhibit challenges the viewer to analyze perceptions of “seeing” and individual artist intention.

Thornton Dial Sr. | Lady Stretching Her Legs, 1991 | 22″h x 30″ w
Watercolor, Charcoal, Pencil on Rag Paper
| $8000.00
An important part of the story of art has been characterized by self-taught ingenuity and work ethic honed by struggle for survival and passionate appreciation for life. As an African-American man born in Alabama, Thornton Dial’s (b.1928) art represents a deeply important voice in this story and embodies many of the developments and shifts in the way art is made, understood, and consumed in the modern world.

Dial’s work is included in private and museum collections across the country such as the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art. He has had solo exhibitions at major museums including a joint exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and the American Folk Art Museum in New York in 1993, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, in 2005, and was featured in the 2000 Whitney Biennial.

First Friday in Philadelphia

“Spilled Milk” | 24″ h x 32″ w (image) | mixed media on cardboard on wood (framed, shadowbox)

Bloom is deemed by most aficionados as an Outsider Folk Artist. A social reactionary creating intuitive social commentary, Bloom’s imagery has received international acclaim, showing from the Hamptons  to Aubagne, France.

Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1968, Jim resides presently in California. Creating intense visual art inseparable from personal experiences, his human interaction, relationships, gender, sexuality and the mental health system, Bloom shares his interests in film, story-telling, and the visual languages of his culture. Wanting his pointed imagery to function like the movement of television, capturing the eye, quickly conveying messages and feeling, Bloom’s efforts highlight the power of line, light and gestural simplicity.
